The following is a Q&A with Dillon Smith, Owner at CMO.Church:
What are your greatest hopes and dreams for the next couple of years for your church?
Our goal is to make world-class marketing strategy available to every church on the planet. We do this primarily by serving the masses through free content/communities, and serving a few businesses and nonprofits through our fractional marketing services.
Why did you choose to do a residency & what are you hopeful will happen through this process?
I was a resident. I have my entire career thanks to the residency process. I’m excited to invest and develop the next generation like the generation before me did for me.
What is it like to work on staff there?
We move fast, serve a lot of different clients on a given day, and are always meeting new businesses and churches. On any given day, you will touch a lot of different project/clients, use a lot of different platforms, and probably learn something new about the ever-changing marketing landscape.
Does your church’s website state the mission, vision, values and key distinctives of your church? Please paste the link:
Please describe the current staff structure.
I am full time and I serve as our lead CMO and owner. My cofounder Nate Singleton is about 10 hours per week and manages our paid strategy and is another fractional CMO, and we have a few contractors that manage details, paid ads, and video editing/social content.
What qualities does it take to “win” on staff at your church?
3 Primary Qualities:
Ask a lot of questions.
Always take the initiative.
Be coachable.
Who will the resident report to? Will there be a different person acting as coach? What do you know about their personalities (enneagram, DiSC, Strength Finders, etc.) Have you given thought as to what type of personality will work best with them?

Are there particular assessment tools that you prefer when exploring potential staff people?
Working Genius would be great.
Are you affiliated with a particular denomination or tribes/association of churches? If so, what websites could one investigate to gain further understanding?
We are highly-connected with Gloo and Carey Nieuwhof.
What is your average number of clients?
15 current clients.
How much are you planning on financially compensating your resident? Is it set or is it flexible?
$20/hourly
What are the expected work hours and what does a typical workweek look like for this resident?
15–20 weekly hours, with consistent daily coverage Monday through Thursday.
What else would you say to a resident considering joining your team?
I believe that the church is a decade behind on marketing strategy. If you’re passionate about helping the church ecosystem increase their caliber of marketing and digital outreach, this is the place for you.
