Generis

Generis wants to change the conversation about faith and money in the church, and they are looking for an Operations and Events Resident.

Expected Work Hours: 40 hours per week
Expected Pay: $20 per hour

What are your greatest hopes and dreams for the next couple of years for your church?

Generis wants to change the conversation about faith and money in the church. That means that ministry leaders in every kingdom-oriented organization within Generis’ reach are equipped to have biblically sound, contextually relevant conversations with their members, worshipers, constituents, and stakeholders about how generosity intersects with their lives as disciples of Jesus. When those conversations happen and people embrace the life of generosity modeled by Jesus, individuals’ spiritual lives are enriched and resources flow into those ministries in ways that transform communities and cultivate the kingdom of God.

In the next two years we will take unprecedented strides toward that vision, expanding our consulting team to reach more ministries, enhancing and transforming our home office team to support more consultants, and building the sort of processes and systems that can facilitate generosity ministry at a scale that Generis has only dreamed of…until now. The Business Systems Resident gets to be a part of that work.

Why did you choose to do a residency & what are you hopeful will happen through this process?

Generis offers the Operations and Events Residency to invest in rising leaders who are passionate about the ministry of administration, backend systems, and high-touch hospitality.  Effective organizational support—from seamless event execution and welcoming hospitality to precise operational execution—is vital for empowering our consultants and serving our client churches with excellence. Through this residency, we hope to provide hands-on experience and mentorship that equips the resident with practical administrative and operational skills, while strengthening Generis's capacity to serve ministry leaders and cultivate a culture of generosity.

What is it like to work on staff there?

Generis is a high-performance environment where every team member is invited (and expected) to inhabit our core values in the pursuit of our clients’ needs. We set a high bar for our home office and our consultants because our clients’ missions depend on whether we can deliver services with excellence and unmatched focus on the success of their vision. High-performance requires hard work, but this is empowering for each team member because they’re able to work alongside the best of the best, thriving in an environment that values and celebrates each person’s contributions.

Employees work in the office three days a week and have the option to work remotely two days a week. We expect our team members to bring their best during working hours and when work is done to be off. We offer PTO and paid holidays for all employees. We also offer a health insurance plan, disability and life insurance, and a retirement plan.

Please describe the current staff structure.

Generis has a relatively small headquarters team (we call it the “Home Office Team” or “HOT”) that supports our field consultants. A three-member executive team coordinates with leaders in operations and marketing. The full HOT meets semimonthly for strategy, coordination, and culture reinforcement. Departments meet weekly to facilitate tactical work and coordination. The full Generis team—HOT and consultants—meets three times a year in an offsite retreat for training, fellowship, worship, and culture reinforcement.

What qualities does it take to “win” on staff at your church?

Honesty. Generis team members tell the truth and accept responsibility.
Grit. Generis team members have a deep passion and unyielding perseverance toward meaningful goals without someone holding their hand.
Adaptability. When a Generis team member hits a wall, they find ways to go through it, over it, under it, or around it.
Curiosity. You cannot thrive at Generis if you never ask “what if” or “how does that work?”
Generosity. Each of us freely gives our time, attention, resources, and kindness to others on our team, through our churches, and throughout all areas of our lives because God has done that for us.

Who will the resident report to? Will there be a different person acting as coach? What do you know about their personalities (enneagram, DiSC, Strength Finders, etc.) Have you given thought as to what type of personality will work best with them?

The resident will report to the Director of Consultant Services (DCS), who will also serve as coach.

The DCS profiles as a RightPath Strategic Thinker with a very high D on DISC. Her Working Genius results are Wonder and Tenacity, and her top CliftonStrengths are Context, Achiever, Relator, Ideation, and Belief. She asks big questions about where the work is going and then drives hard to finish it. As a Relator, she invests deeply in the people she works closely with.

She generates ideas quickly and is intentional about signaling which ones are ready for action. Her energy is strongest at the vision and completion ends of a project, which creates a meaningful opportunity for a resident who enjoys the detailed work in between.

Generis is looking for someone who complements the Operations Team. A resident with Enablement on Working Genius, a higher S or C on DISC, and strengths such as Discipline, Arranger, or Responsibility would fit the role well. That person also needs to be secure enough to ask questions, raise concerns early, and take direct communication without taking it personally.

Are there particular assessment tools that you prefer when exploring potential staff people?

Working Genius: The strongest fit for this role is a resident with Enablement as one of their working geniuses, ideally paired with Tenacity. Most of the position involves responding to people and finishing tasks well, from reception and hospitality to ticket routing and event support. Enablement fuels the service side of that work, and Tenacity carries it through to completion. Enablement fills the supportive middle of a project. A resident with Wonder and Invention as working geniuses might find the routine nature of the role draining.

RightPath: Generis believes a Supporter profile would fit this role best. Supporters tend to be steady, patient, and service-minded, and they work comfortably within established procedures. In factor terms, the ideal resident would score lower in Control, higher in Patience and Conformity, and moderate in Sociability, enough warmth for the front office without drifting from the detail work. Generis would be more cautious about high-Control profiles such as Director or Strategic Thinker, which may find the role confining.

Are you affiliated with a particular denomination or tribes/association of churches? If so, what websites could one investigate to gain further understanding?

No. Generis serves all Christian denominations and independent Christian churches and ministries. The resident will need to be accepting of the variety of Christian expressions with which he or she may interact on the Generis team and in any client engagement.

What are the key doctrinal and theological issues where alignment is essential?

While within Generis there are many different theological perspectives, common among all consultants and employees is a firm conviction that generosity is an essential discipline of Christ followers. One cannot be a faithful follower of Jesus if one does not learn to be generous with the resources the Lord has entrusted to one’s care.

What is your business known for in the community?

We are the largest generosity consulting firm serving exclusively churches and faith-based non-profits. We are known for capital campaigns and other initiatives that have a strong focus on discipleship and giving as a spiritual discipline over financial transaction.

How much are you planning on financially compensating your resident?  Is it set or is it flexible?

Starting salary is projected to be $20 per hour. This is flexible commensurate with experience. The base compensation will be evaluated at key points throughout the resident’s tenure.

What does a typical work week look like for this resident?

Employees work in the office three days a week and have the option to work remotely two days a week. Work weeks are Monday through Friday. We expect our team members to bring their best during working hours and when work is done to be off. We offer PTO and paid holidays for all employees.

What else would you say to a resident considering joining your team?

A residency at Generis will help you to connect with some of the most creative, impactful Church and nonprofit leaders throughout North America; give you hands-on experience with a variety of real-world business disciplines; expose you to churches and nonprofits of all sizes and types; and, most importantly, provide you with a launching pad for a fulfilling ministry career.
