Generis
Generis wants to change the conversation about faith and money in the church, and they are looking for a Business Systems Resident.
Expected Work Hours: 40 hours per week
Expected Pay: $20 per hour
What are your greatest hopes and dreams for the next couple of years for your church?
Generis wants to change the conversation about faith and money in the church. That means that ministry leaders in every kingdom-oriented organization within Generis’ reach is equipped to have biblically sound, contextually relevant conversations with their members, worshipers, constituents, and stakeholders about how generosity intersects with their lives as disciples of Jesus. When those conversations happen and people embrace the life of generosity modeled by Jesus, individuals’ spiritual lives are enriched and resources flow into those ministries in ways that transform communities and cultivate the kingdom of God.
In the next two years we will take unprecedented strides toward that vision, expanding our consulting team to reach more ministries, enhancing and transforming our home office team to support more consultants, and building the sort of processes and systems that can facilitate generosity ministry at a scale that Generis has only dreamed of…until now. The Business Systems Resident gets to be a part of that work.
Why did you choose to do a residency & what are you hopeful will happen through this process?
We know that to be the kind of firm that continues leading in generosity and can stay ahead of the tsunami of technological change that is sweeping over the modern church and business landscape, Generis needs innovative risk takers on our team who think differently about the problems our firm faces. We see residency as a means to cultivate and unleash these sorts of leaders—leaders who can make a meaningful impact both during their time with us and during a lifetime of ministry beyond our firm—because the Church needs these kinds of leaders just as much as we do. Modern ministry is not just pulpits and preaching, youth programs and worship services. Ministry is also administration and systems, staff leadership, and financial planning. We believe that our firm’s position as a for-profit consultancy serving exclusively churches and faith-based nonprofits offers the perfect place for people who may be called to the ministry of administration to learn best practices, develop applicable skills, make meaningful contributions, and be prepared for transformative ministry in church and nonprofit contexts throughout their careers.
What is it like to work on staff there?
Generis is a high-performance environment where every team member is invited (and expected) to inhabit our core values in the pursuit of our clients’ needs. We set a high bar for our home office and our consultants because our clients’ mission depends on whether we can deliver services with excellence and unmatched focus on the success of their vision. High-performance requires hard work, but this is empowering for each team member because they’re able to work alongside the best of the best, thriving in an environment that values and celebrates each person’s contributions.
Employees work in the office three days a week and have the option to work remotely two days a week. We expect our team members to bring their best during working hours and when work is done to be off. We offer PTO and paid holidays for all employees. We also offer a health insurance plan, disability and life insurance, and a retirement plan.

Please describe the current staff structure.
Generis has a relatively small headquarters team (we call it the “Home Office Team” or “HOT”) that supports our field consultants. A three-member executive team coordinates with leaders in operations and marketing. The full HOT meets semimonthly for strategy, coordination, and culture reinforcement. Departments meet weekly to facilitate tactical work and coordination. The full Generis team—HOT and consultants—meets three times a year in an offsite retreat for training, fellowship, worship, and culture reinforcement.
What qualities does it take to “win” on staff at your church?
Honesty. Generis team members tell the truth and accept responsibility.
Grit. Generis team members have a deep passion and unyielding perseverance toward meaningful goals without someone holding their hand.
Adaptability. When a Generis team member hits a wall, they find ways to go through it, over it, under it, or around it.
Curiosity. You cannot thrive at Generis if you never ask “what if” or “how does that work?”
Generosity. Each of us freely gives our time, attention, resources, and kindness to others on our team, through our churches, and throughout all areas of our lives because God has done that for us.
Who will the resident report to? Will there be a different person acting as coach? What do you know about their personalities (enneagram, DiSC, Strength Finders, etc.) Have you given thought as to what type of personality will work best with them?
The resident will report to and be coached by the President & Chief Operating Officer. They will be directed in some aspects of their work by others on the operations team, especially during the residency learning rotations through various business disciplines.
The President and COO’s personality tests show the following results:
● DiSC: high D and high C
● Working Genius
Working Geniuses: Tenacity and Invention
Working Competencies: Wonder and Discernment
Working Frustrations: Galvanizing and Enablement
● Strength Finder: Input, Ideation, Strategic, Command, Deliberative
● RightPath Path4: Analyzer
A complementary candidate likely has working geniuses Enablement, Invention, and/or Discernment. From the perspective of the DiSC, the demands of the role suggest a high C, but someone with high S balances the President’s high D.
Are there particular assessment tools that you prefer when exploring potential staff people?
Generis uses the RightPath to assess candidate fit during its hiring process. The Analyzer profile is likely a good fit for this role. He or she would likely trend toward Methodical over Spontaneous, Abstract over Concrete, and Adventurous over Cautious. They are probably mid-range in the continua between Accommodating and Directing, Reserved and Engaging, and Harmonious and Challenging. We know that no personality test can prove or disprove fit. We always assess the whole person.
Are you affiliated with a particular denomination or tribes/association of churches? If so, what websites could one investigate to gain further understanding?
No. Generis serves all Christian denominations and independent Christian churches and ministries. The resident will need to be accepting of the variety of Christian expressions with which he or she may interact on the Generis team and in any client engagement.
What are the key doctrinal and theological issues where alignment is essential?
While within Generis there are many different theological perspectives, common among all consultants and employees is a firm conviction that generosity is an essential discipline of Christ followers. One cannot be a faithful follower of Jesus if one does not learn to be generous with the resources the Lord has entrusted to one’s care.
What is your business known for in the community?
We are the largest generosity consulting firm serving exclusively churches and faith-based non-profits. We are known for capital campaigns and other initiatives that have a strong focus on discipleship and giving as a spiritual discipline over financial transaction.
How much are you planning on financially compensating your resident? Is it set or is it flexible?
Starting salary is projected to be $20 per hour. This is flexible commensurate with experience. The base compensation will be evaluated at key points throughout the resident’s tenure.
What does a typical work week look like for this resident?
Employees work in the office three days a week and have the option to work remotely two days a week. Work weeks are Monday through Friday. We expect our team members to bring their best during working hours and when work is done to be off. We offer PTO and paid holidays for all employees.
What else would you say to a resident considering joining your team?
A residency at Generis will help you to connect with some of the most creative, impactful Church and nonprofit leaders throughout North America; give you hands-on experience with a variety of real-world business disciplines; expose you to churches and nonprofits of all sizes and types; and, most importantly, provide you with a launching pad for a fulfilling ministry career.
